The division has been in existence in one form or another, since the inception of the Maryland State Police. The division provides an array of necessary support functions but its primary function is to address the Department’s vehicle needs in both acquisition and maintenance.

Mission Statement

To provide vehicle procurement, maintenance and disposal services to the Department and to insure strict accountability of the Department's resources. In addition, to provide Department personnel the best possible police vehicle and equipment in furtherance, and in support, of the Department's stated mission.

Administrative Staff

Motor Vehicle Division Administrative Staff is located at MVD Headquarters in Jessup. The administrative duties are labor intensive consisting of hours of computer data entry as well as paper file maintenance. All vehicle service records are maintained here as well as tag and titling responsibilities for the agencies fleet. Pertinent information regarding the fleet and its usage is constantly updated and forwarded to the Maryland Department of General Services. Vehicle repairs resulting from collisions are monitored and approved here.

Vehicle Maintenance

Motor Vehicle Division has, under its supervision, twenty garages spread across the state to provide Motor Vehicle Division mechanic performing brake inspection on vehicleaccessible maintenance to the agencies fleet, providing scheduled and emergency repairs.

MVD mechanics complete an astonishing 12,000 + service requests annually. The service requests vary from scheduled maintenances like oil, filter, and tire changes to full engine replacements.

MVD mechanics adhere to strict guidelines set by (MOSHA) Maryland Occupational Safety and Heath Act as well as (OSHA) Occupational Safety Heath Administration.

Used oil, antifreeze and hazardous materials recovered from MSP vehicles are safely stored and sent for proper recycling or disposal.

Vehicle Technology and Designs

The Motor Vehicle Division is responsible for installing lights, sirens, computer docking stations and 2012 Chevrolet Tahoeconsoles along with an assortment of other intricate wiring tasks. The reflective markings and paint schemes that transform vehicles into highly recognizable and admired Maryland State Police vehicles are created at the Motor Vehicle Division Headquarters. The Division is constantly testing state of the art emergency equipment to determine if they are applicable to enhance the safety of our troopers and the public.

Accident Review Board

Maryland State Troopers are held to extremely high standards with regard to operating vehicles in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Troopers are subjected to hours of training and are expected to uphold the standards and professionalism required by the Maryland State Police.

With the Maryland State Police being a statewide agency, Troopers are responsible for some 12,407 square miles of jurisdiction. Department vehicles are on patrol 24 hours a day 7 days a week and therefore are subjected to driving conditions and weather of all types.

The Accident Review Board reviews and examines all accident investigations which involve Department vehicles. The board impartially determines the cause of the accident and uses findings to determine any administrative actions. This information is also used, through training, to find ways to prevent collisions in the future.
